The main organiser is the National Bioscientists Association(Panellinia Enosi Vioepistimonon - PEV), approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and supported by the Department of Biology, University of Athens (N.K.U.A) and B.R.F.A.A.
Panellinios Diagonismos Biologias, P.D.B. (Greek National Biology Contest) consists of 3 rounds.
Early February - Round 1
Mid March - Round 2
End of April - Round 3
Round 3 is hosted at the Biology Department of the University of Athens, while round 1 and 2 are hosted in High Schools.
P.D.B. is the most popular of the N.B.O.s in Science and 5.200 students (10th, 11th, 12th grade) participate in round 1.
In round 2 about 50 students (11th and 12th grade) are qualified.
In round 3 the best 12 students participate from which the first 4 make up the delegation.
Rounds 1 and 2 are multiple choice tests, in paper. The Organising and Scientific commitee are responsible for the exam papers and the exams take place in schools.
Round 3 is only practical and takes place in the labs of the Biology Department of N.K.U.A. The tasks are organized by university Professors with the help of the National Coordinator.
The training takes place in the facilities of the Biology Department (University of Athens) and B.R.F.A.A. after the school year ends and before IBO. Only the 4 students of the delegation take part and it lasts two weeks. The practical training is has a general part and a part focused on the practical exams of each year's IBO.
For round 2 chapters of the "Biology" (Campbell & Reece) are provided.
For the 4 students of the delegation we provide university books, ppt and past papers from IBO.
Certificates for the top students of each grade in Round 1.
In round 3 the delegation students are awarded a full package of t-shirts, books, tablets (from the Onassis Foundation) and other stuff from sponsors.
The rest of the students of round 3 participate in a special 2-3 days lab festival in the Biology Department (University of Athens).
After IBO, the students of the delegation are awarded special gifts by the President of the Greek Republic in a special ceremony.
NO MONEY are awarded.
Education
All students from regular Upper Secondary education ( General High Schools that follow the Greek curriculum in Biology), both from public and private schools.
All students contest separately by grade in Round 1.
Students of 10th grade participate only in Round 1 and cannot qualify in IBO.
Students of 11th and 12th grade (the ones that follow the Biology sector) have a common Round 2 and 3 and are allowed to join the Greek Delegation in IBO
School year starts in middle September and ends by the end of June.
